# Mac Screenshot Shortcut Not Working? 8 Fixes for Cmd+Shift+4 (2026)

**July 2, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

The most common cause is another app claiming **Cmd+Shift+4**. CleanShot X, Monosnap, and Droplr can reassign it; macOS upgrades can also reset shortcut settings. Try these fixes from top to bottom.

## Quick reference

| Shortcut | Action |
|---|---|
| Cmd+Shift+3 | Capture the entire screen |
| Cmd+Shift+4 | Capture a selected area |
| Cmd+Shift+4, then Space | Capture a window |
| Cmd+Shift+5 | Open the Screenshot toolbar |
| Cmd+Shift+6 | Capture the Touch Bar on supported Macs |

## Fix 1: Reset screenshot shortcuts

1. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts**.
2. Select **Screenshots**.
3. Ensure screenshot options have checkmarks.
4. Click **Restore Defaults**.
5. Try **Cmd+Shift+4** again.

## Fix 2: Check app conflicts

macOS displays a yellow warning badge beside a conflicting shortcut. Common conflicts include:

- **CleanShot X:** Can reassign screenshot shortcuts during setup.
- **Monosnap:** Can claim region capture.
- **Droplr:** Uses similar capture shortcuts.
- **Skitch:** Older versions can override macOS shortcuts.

Quit the suspected app from the menu bar and retry. If the shortcut works, change that app's shortcut or uninstall it.

## Fix 3: Check the keyboard input source

AZERTY, QWERTZ, Dvorak, and other layouts can remap number keys.

1. Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Input Sources** or **Edit** beside Input Sources.
2. Put English or your primary layout at the top.
3. Switch to it from the menu bar input menu and retry.

## Fix 4: Restart

Restart from **Apple menu > Restart** to clear issues in `screencaptureui` and `WindowServer`. Alternatively, run:

```bash
killall screencaptureui
```

A full restart also resets WindowServer and is more reliable.

## Fix 5: Check disk space

If the startup disk is nearly full, macOS may fail silently to create the screenshot.

1. Open **Apple menu > About This Mac > Storage** or **More Info > Storage Settings**.
2. If available space is under **1 GB**, empty Trash, remove old downloads, or move files to an external drive.
3. Retry the shortcut.

## Fix 6: Regenerate screenshot preferences

1. Open Finder and press **Cmd+Shift+G**.
2. Enter `~/Library/Preferences/`.
3. Find `com.apple.screencapture.plist`.
4. Move it to the Desktop rather than deleting it immediately.
5. Restart the Mac.

macOS creates a new preferences file on restart. If captures work, the old file can be deleted.

## Fix 7: Safe Mode

Safe Mode disables third-party login items, extensions, and nonessential services.

**Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4):**

1. Shut down.
2. Hold the power button until “Loading startup options” appears.
3. Select the startup disk, hold Shift, and click **Continue in Safe Mode**.

**Intel:**

1. Shut down.
2. Turn on and immediately hold **Shift**.
3. Release Shift at the login window.

If the shortcut works in Safe Mode, restart normally and disable login items individually under **System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions**.

## Fix 8: Reset NVRAM on Intel Macs

This applies only to Intel Macs; Apple Silicon resets NVRAM automatically on restart.

1. Shut down.
2. Turn on and immediately hold **Cmd+Option+P+R**.
3. Hold for about **20 seconds**; the Mac may restart.
4. Release the keys and boot normally.
5. Return to Fix 1 and verify screenshot shortcuts.

## Alternative capture methods

- Open **Applications > Utilities > Screenshot**, or search for Screenshot with **Cmd+Space**. This uses the capture engine without relying on shortcuts.
- [LazyScreenshots](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/) costs **$29 one-time**, uses its own capture engine and shortcuts, and auto-pastes into Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT.
