# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac with an External or Windows Keyboard

**April 15, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team**

We explain how to use Windows, mechanical, Logitech, generic USB, Bluetooth, wireless, compact, and other non-Apple keyboards for screenshots on macOS Sequoia, Sonoma, and Ventura.

## Key mapping: Windows keyboard to Mac

macOS maps external-keyboard modifiers by default as follows:

| Windows key | Mac function | Symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Windows / Super | Command | ⌘ |
| Alt | Option | ⌥ |
| Ctrl | Control | ⌃ |

| Action | Windows-keyboard shortcut |
|---|---|
| Full-screen screenshot | Windows + Shift + 3 |
| Selection screenshot | Windows + Shift + 4 |
| Screenshot toolbar | Windows + Shift + 5 |
| Specific window | Windows + Shift + 4, then Space |
| Copy to clipboard | Add Ctrl to any shortcut above |

Use the Windows or Super key as Command; pressing Ctrl instead is the most common mistake.

## Swap modifier keys in System Settings

Open **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Modifier Keys**, select the external keyboard, and reassign physical keys. We can:

- Swap Windows and Alt so the key beside the spacebar acts as Command.
- Map Caps Lock to Control or Command.
- Map a key to **No Action** to disable it.

These changes apply per keyboard and do not affect the MacBook’s built-in keyboard.

## Make Print Screen useful

macOS ignores Print Screen by default. We can use one of three approaches:

1. **System Settings:** Go to **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots**, select a shortcut such as “Save picture of screen as a file,” and press Print Screen. Some keyboards expose a keycode macOS can recognize; others do not.
2. **Karabiner-Elements:** [Karabiner-Elements](https://karabiner-elements.pqrs.org/) is a free, open-source macOS remapping tool. In **Simple Modifications**, select the external keyboard and map Print Screen to F13; then assign F13 to a screenshot shortcut in System Settings. Complex Modifications can map Print Screen directly to a screenshot sequence.
3. **LazyScreenshots:** We let you assign any single key or key combination as the screenshot trigger, regardless of keyboard layout.

## Compact keyboards and Fn layers

60% and 65% keyboards such as Keychron K6, Anne Pro, and HHKB may require **Windows + Shift + Fn + 3** because the number row is behind an Fn layer. Alternatives include:

- Windows + Shift + S.
- A Hyper key—Caps Lock mapped to Command+Control+Option+Shift—plus S.
- F5 or F6 assigned in System Settings.

Set custom combinations at **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts > Screenshots** by double-clicking a shortcut and pressing the desired keys.

## Bluetooth and wireless keyboards

If modifiers register late, hold Windows + Shift briefly before pressing 3. If the keyboard has a macOS/Windows switch, use Mac mode; Windows mode can change modifier mappings and keycodes. Logitech keyboards with Logi Options+ include a macOS screenshot shortcut button that can be assigned to any key.

## Quick reference

| Keyboard type | Full screen | Selection | Toolbar |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple keyboard | ⌘ ⇧ 3 | ⌘ ⇧ 4 | ⌘ ⇧ 5 |
| Windows keyboard | Win Shift 3 | Win Shift 4 | Win Shift 5 |
| Custom remap | Any combination set in System Settings > Keyboard Shortcuts | | |

## A faster workflow for external-keyboard users

The macOS floating thumbnail gives a few seconds to annotate, but switching from a GitHub issue, Slack message, or code review to another app interrupts the workflow. We capture, annotate, and auto-paste screenshots into the app you are already using, including Claude, Cursor, and ChatGPT. There is no file management, drag-and-drop, or context switch.
