# How to Take a Screenshot on Mac Without a Keyboard

April 13, 2026 · LazyScreenshots Team

We cover five keyboard-free Mac screenshot methods for broken or disconnected keyboards, external-display setups, accessibility needs, and Windows keyboards: the Screenshot app, Preview, Siri, Voice Control, and menu-bar tools.

## Screenshot app in Launchpad

Open **Launchpad** from the Dock, open the **Other** folder, and click **Screenshot**. You can also open **Finder > Applications > Utilities** and double-click **Screenshot**.

The toolbar lets you click to capture the entire screen, a window, or a selected portion. **Options** provides a 5-second or 10-second timer, save-location selection, and floating-thumbnail controls.

**Best for:** quick captures with a mouse or trackpad when the keyboard is unavailable.

## Preview’s screenshot feature

1. Open Preview.
2. Choose **File > Take Screenshot**.
3. Select one of:
   - **From Selection:** drag over a rectangular region.
   - **From Window:** click a window.
   - **From Entire Screen:** capture everything after a short countdown.

The unsaved image opens directly in Preview, where you can crop it, use Markup, adjust colors, and save it.

**Best for:** capturing and editing before sharing.

## Siri

On a Mac running macOS Sierra or later with Siri enabled, click the Siri icon in the menu bar or Dock and say **“Take a screenshot.”** Siri captures the full screen and saves a PNG to the Desktop or configured screenshot location. You can say **“Take a screenshot of the window”** for a window capture.

Siri introduces a brief delay, so it is unsuitable for menus or tooltips that require precise timing. The Siri interface may appear in a full-screen capture.

**Best for:** hands-free capture when precise mouse control is also difficult.

## Voice Control

Enable it under **System Settings > Accessibility > Voice Control**. A microphone icon appears in the menu bar while it listens.

Example commands:

- **“Click File”**, then **“Click Take Screenshot”** to use Preview.
- **“Open Screenshot”** to launch the Screenshot app.
- **“Press Command Shift 3”** to simulate the full-screen shortcut.

Voice Control can simulate any keyboard shortcut. Saying **“Press Command Shift 4”** produces the selection crosshair, which you can use with a mouse or trackpad. You can create a custom command under **Voice Control > Commands**, such as “Capture screen.”

**Best for:** recurring screenshot access with physical keyboard limitations.

## Third-party menu-bar tools

Most Mac screenshot apps provide a menu-bar icon. Click it, select full-screen, window, region, or scrolling capture, and click to capture. Some also support trackpad gestures, older MacBook Pro Touch Bar buttons, or a Sidecar sidebar button on an iPad used as a secondary display.

**Best for:** one-click capture with features such as annotation, cloud upload, and auto-organization.

## Comparison

| Method | Capture types | Needs keyboard | Built-in editing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screenshot app | Full, window, selection, recording | No | No |
| Preview | Full, window, selection | No | Yes, Markup |
| Siri | Full, window | No | No |
| Voice Control | All; simulates shortcuts | No | No |
| Third-party menu bar | All plus extras | No | Usually yes |

## Windows keyboard mapping

On a Windows keyboard connected to a Mac:

- **Windows key** = `Cmd`
- **Alt** = `Option`
- **Ctrl** = `Control`

The screenshot shortcuts are `Win+Shift+3` for full screen, `Win+Shift+4` for selection, and `Win+Shift+5` for the toolbar. If they fail, check **System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard Shortcuts**. You can remap keys under **System Settings > Keyboard > Modifier Keys** by selecting the external keyboard.

## Fastest keyboard-free workflow

A menu-bar tool can capture, annotate, and deliver an image to the target app in one click. LazyScreenshots puts a capture button in the menu bar, auto-pastes into the current app, and can send the result to Claude, Cursor, or ChatGPT without keyboard shortcuts or window switching.

LazyScreenshots captures, annotates, and auto-pastes screenshots from one menu-bar click. It costs $29 one-time: [Try LazyScreenshots — $29 one-time](https://www.lazyscreenshots.com/).
